Walking with the Comrades | Arundhati Roy | Book Review

Walking with the Comrades is an eyewitness account of the Naxalite–Maoist insurgency by Indian author Arundhati Roy. The book covers her time in 2010 spent living with Naxalite communist guerillas deep within the forests of rural Chhattisgarh.

I just finished reading the book and it was an eye-opening journey into the world of guerrilla warfare and social activism. The author's vivid descriptions and personal anecdotes brought the struggles and aspirations of the people to life. In an effort to broaden my perspective and challenge my own biases, I decided to engage with literature that represents the left ideology. This particular book was recommended to me during a discussion with a friend who felt that my views were leaning towards the right.

In my assessment, Arundhati Roy offers a unique perspective on the Naxalite insurgency in India. While I acknowledge the importance of freedom of expression and the exploration of diverse narratives, I believe it is crucial to approach such complex issues with caution and a balanced understanding. Roy's book sheds light on the lived experiences of individuals involved in the Naxalite movement and their grievances. It highlights the socio-economic disparities and systemic failures that have contributed to the rise of such insurgency movements. Exploring these stories helps us grasp the underlying causes and the need to address them.

However, it is also necessary to recognise the potential risks and consequences associated with the Naxalite insurgency. Acts of violence, destruction, and loss of innocent lives have been linked to these movements, which pose significant challenges to our nation's security and development. It is vital to strike a balance between understanding the root causes and finding constructive solutions while upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety of the citizens. As a nation, we must prioritise national unity and the preservation of our democratic principles. We should strive to find peaceful solutions to address grievances and uplift marginalised communities, rather than endorsing or glorifying movements that undermine the fabric of our society. While literature has the power to provoke thought and spark discussions, it is crucial to critically examine the narratives presented and consider the potential consequences of their impact.

**By selectively highlighting certain aspects, the book tries present an incomplete picture that supports a specific narrative. To present a more balanced viewpoint, it is essential to consider all relevant factors and conduct a thorough analysis of the pricing structure. To gain a comprehensive understanding, it is crucial to consider the entire value chain involved in mining operations. Moreover, the royalty rate set by the government, as mentioned in the Lokayukta Report, is determined through a well-established regulatory framework. This rate is based on market conditions, industry competitiveness, and the government's aim to strike a balance between revenue generation and attracting investment.
